I am just worried because the wakaba software is very old.
I looked into some of the older IB software a few years ago I know for a fact that, for example, two other old imageboard softwares kusaba and kusaba-X have issues (likely even security related ones) The reason why I linked the picochan git repo is that the code is easy to understand, the software is lightweight and it is actively maintained.
Anonymous · #10 · Reply
Don't worry anon. Kusaba was known to have bad code. Wakaba is still pretty widely used, so if there were any serious issues we'd probably have heard about it by now.

The otters of the world map is a huge asset (3.58 MB) to have on the front page: sluggish load time and uses weloveotters.com's bandwidth. You could host a smaller map which could be clicked for full size. Here's a more reasonable size while still being legible.

<a target="_blank" href="https://weloveotterscom.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/otters-of-the-world-map.jpg">

Anonymous · #45 · Reply
Thanks anon, I'll consider it. I might also switch to miniature pictures with text descriptions like we had on 8chan.
Is site loading speed an issue? It seems pretty fast to me.
Anonymous · #49 · Reply
It's good, other than that. ~7 seconds for the otter board. ~7 seconds for the front page, excluding the ottmap. ~19 seconds for the ottmap. Almost triple the load time dedicated to a single asset is bad, but much worse design exists on the web. Wakaba is nice, I like it a lot more than LynxChan.
Anonymous · #50 · Reply
We're now self-hosting a WebP version of this pic that cut the size down from 4M to around 200K. Ran some tests and it seems the average load speed is between 1 and 3 seconds, which is certainly acceptable.
Where are you located, if you don't mind me asking? Our servers are in Singapore, so anons that are further away might be more on the slow end. Although 7 seconds sounds pretty bad anyhow. Could it be your connection isn't that great?
Anonymous · #55 · Reply

I'm testing over Tor, but my bare connection isn't that great either. ~7 seconds for the front page now, including the ottmap. Much better thanks to the WebP.

It's a shame to see one of the original boards leave but glad you guys have a site of your own to call home. Wish you anons all the best.
How easy was it to set up the site? I would love to have my own website to host my board but unfortunately I'm a retard when it comes to tech and struggle to set up a database let alone get vichan working.
Anonymous · #59 · Reply
It's doable even with little experience. You'll need your server, put something like CentOS or Ubuntu on it, then install and set up a database and whatever dependencies the imageboard software you're using requires, and finally get the IB itself running. That's the gist of the process, and the details may vary depending on what you want to use. You'll likely run into situations where you need to figure out something for yourself, or where something's not working even though you think it should. Those are the most challenging bits but they can be overcome. For the most part it's a matter of looking up online guides and following them.

Which CSS theme do you guys prefer? Rakko is easy on the eyes especially in the dark, but Kawauso is nice during daylight.
Anonymous · #403 · Reply
I usually use Kawauso, just because it feels like the natural colors for otterchan. It was the primary CSS on the cafe, and it still feels right here. If my eyes start hurting, I just turn on my dark mode extension, but I usually don't need to.
Anonymous · #446 · Reply
How would you guys think about hosting other animal/nature themed boards here?
Anonymous · #451 · Reply
I would always be in favour of a wolf board, and other mustelids of course, but I do think otters are discerning by nature and very selective about the kinds of habitats they grace with their presence, so we would need to keep it somewhat exclusive or the otters might leavee. That said, otters are happiest in a diverse ecosystem so perhaps it's best to allow it to evolve naturally.
Anonymous · #453 · Reply
I wouldn't necessarily be against it, though I would wonder if there is a legitimate demand, and if so, what other boards would come up. I can't think of any specific boards that I wouldn't want on otterchan as of now, though I would have a concern that it would become less "otterchan" and more "general-naturechan" if that makes any sense
Anonymous · #455 · Reply
I'd definitely keep the mustelid theme, or at least small carnivores

If you want to eventually toy with rotating banners at some point, you could check out the wakaba repo of emmausrs or lisanyan and see how they do it.
https://github.com/emmausrs/Wakaba/commit/22a80d108fda6b3142ce8dc4a7ab53b407f9a2ae
https://github.com/lisanyan/wakaba/blob/master/lib/futaba_style.pl
I'd help a bit more if I had some sort of experience with Wakaba/IBs (or CSS in general. (and maybe Perl if I feel like hurting myself))

Anonymous · #564 · Reply
Thanks! I might try doing it this way. Although apparently there is a way to do rotating banners natively, using some manner of Perl script file.

# Page look
use constant TITLE => 'Otterchan'; # Name of this image board
use constant SHOWTITLETXT => 0; # Show TITLE at top (1: yes 0: no)
use constant SHOWTITLEIMG => 1; # Show image at top (0: no, 1: single, 2: rotating)
use constant TITLEIMG => 'logo.png'; # Title image (point to a script file if rotating)
All I could find about it was this thread from 2004: https://archives.4-ch.net/tech/kareha.pl/1102969545/ which hasn't enlightened me just yet... Oh well, I kinda like it the way it is. Maybe we can find another use for these cool banners that otteranon made.

My first guess would be to make a tiny script that will look into a folder, pick a random picture and return the name (+ .jpg) of it. (I imagine the rest of the code outside the script will know where to look to get that picture.)
Then point TITLEIMG to that script. That script should return '[name].[ext]' and that should be fine? This is from other experience in c/c++ so idk if my logic work 'w`.

I imagine that an otter would probably choose raw fish, just because that is what he is used to. However, if he had the opportunity to previously have eaten cooked fish and now he understands that it tastes better, he might pick cooked fish over raw.
Anonymous · #725 · Reply
>>721 Maybe it doesn't taste better. Maybe we're the ones missing out.

Somebody should do an experiment: Give an otter raw and cooked fish and see which he eats first.

The plan is to become less of a "chan" and more of a freestanding site, and to shift gears from "anons who like otters" to "everyone who likes otters". Dear Ottmin,

I took a poll of the local otter population on your proposed plans and these were the results:
>shift gears from "anons who like otters" to "everyone who likes otters".
There was general enthusiasm for this idea and a consensus that this is the correct direction for the shared future of otters and people. Having thoroughly one over all the Anons of quality, otters are ready to win the hearts and minds of the wider population.
>another new otter website
Otters in general report excited curiosity to experience something new, an Otterchan v2.0, perhaps, building on the massive success of the original? New year, new sight.
>overall
A majority of otters have been pleasantly surprised by their Otterchan adventures. More than half of all otters are ready to claim even more of the internet to make it into otter-habitable territory. 91.7% of all otters love the ottmin, and that's pretty fucking good cause everyone knows some otters like to ...

Hey friends.
Today I put a little welcome message on the top of the page so visitors will be warmly received. I also changed the Kawauso theme in a small way which makes it look quite a lot nicer imo. I'm thinking of switching Kawa2 to the same font, it might make it look better too.
Do you like the new site logo? It's been up for three months now, I'm quite fond of it but I made it myself so that doesn't really count. We could make it something simpler too. One of my otter friends offered to help improve the site technically. Nice of her. We'll see how that'll work out, I'd been thinking of some features that could be added. Other than that, I've been focussed on promoting Otterchat among otter enthusiasts. Generally it's been well received, although activity remained about the same. Oh well... I'm not one to demand much attention.
ottmin · #2303 · Reply
My hope is that the site pretty much promotes itself, by just being such a delightful place to be with lots of nice things to read about otters. The banners we made are also helping. This year's Ottercine (only ~2 months away!) is something I'm especially looking forward to. since I've been meeting lots of fellow otter enjoyers who are hopefully going to enjoy it with us.
Anonymous · #2308 · Reply
I like the new logo, and I’d say hat all the recent changes to otterchan have been for the better. As for the low activity, I would say that higher activity isn’t necessarily a requirement, though it would obviously be good if we had a higher volume of high quality posts. Still, I’d rather have the current volume and quality than an increase in shitposting. In any event, the site itself is of high quality, and it’s a great place, and I’m glad that it’s here to provide an otterlover community

Honestly, most image boards I wouldn't want much to do with since even if they're using the same kind of platfrom, they're still completely different. I know we once had a board on the webring (back when it used to be called /otter)/, but that was so long ago... By how much this place has grown since then, it doesn't feel like we have a part in it anymore. This is an online space for otter lovers, that's what Otterchat is about. So being an image board doesn't really mean anything to me, what's important is otters. You can go ahead and run our old team if you want, but I'm probably not gonna be bringing much excitement.

Man, the otters aren’t doing the best in the tournament

That's because it's entirely on land, very unfair for otters. If they were playing some home games they'd do better!

Exactly! We're getting deprived of a true home court advantage

I noticed images are now opening in the webpage, nice!
I'm trying it, but it doesn't seem to want to work for me. :(
I do love the idea though!
Anonymous · #3256 · Reply
>>3255 Oh that's strange, it does work for me. How exactly is it not working?
Anonymous · #3257 · Reply
It's saying that the captcha timed out when I had just opened it very briefly and clicked post soon after
Anonymous · #3258 · Reply
>>3257 Sounds like you were seeing a cached version of an expired captcha. I think I fixed it, try it again now?
Anonymous · #3259 · Reply

This is what I keep getting
Anonymous · #3260 · Reply
>>3259 Doesn't it give you a new one when you refresh the page?
Anonymous · #3261 · Reply
No, when I open the page I get one captcha that just stays even if I refresh it
Anonymous · #3262 · Reply
What browser are you using, if you don't mind me asking? I just increased the timeout limit, does that help at all?
Anonymous · #3263 · Reply
I changed some other things around, please check if it works for you now.
Anonymous · #3264 · Reply
Now it's giving me a 404 error. I was using Safari at first, and then I tried Chrome, which gave the 404 error. Is there a better browser this might be more optimized browser?
Anonymous · #3265 · Reply
>>3264
>404 error
Sorry, that was me trying to fix it but making it worse instead.
I just installed every browser I could think of and the captcha worked as intended for each of them. It even works in Internet Explorer. I did it on the ipad too, just to test it on safari, and it worked as well. I only got a timeout error once or twice, but that happens with our current captcha too, and when I got a timeout error it gave me a new, working captcha right after (as intended).
Since I can't find any problem I'm not sure what else I can do. Sorry to say I don't know why it doesn't want to work for you. I don't want to tell you to use another browser but maybe it will work if you do?
Thing is that this captcha we're currently using (the default wakaba captcha) is so unsafe that we might as well not use one at all, and since we've already dealt with bots and spam and such in the past we shouldn't stick with it. And it's also supposed to be a bit of fun for us to guess the otter species from t...

Oh, I just got it to work! I just started trying again and one time it said captcha timed out again, but I went for another shot and it worked that time! Let me try to do it a couple more times and make sure this wasn't just a fluke.
But yeah, I think this is a great idea, both for security reasons and for otters' sake
Anonymous · #3268 · Reply
>>3266 Oh good! I'm relieved that it works for you now. Then I'll get it all set up here in the next few days hopefully.

Still, it's a really cool image Otternon! I had just assumed that you were the original artist of that picture, and that that was simply your style of otter drawing

True, the otters might get mad at each other over particulars. But they might also have a good time playing and shitposting with each other

I tweaked things a bit and it looks like the captcha time out bug is resolved now. Give it a spin

Not that it would ever likely have been a real issue, but we've moved to a safer crypto algorithm, so tripcodes are gonna look different now.
I'm glad! Is there anything else you'd like to see? I might add a search feature.

Do you like what it has become (so far)?

Cute little otters you can put right in your post! :southernriver: If they're too big I can make them smaller. Also suggest some more if you want.
This might work for you?
